If you’re thinking about installing a security system in your home but are worried about the cost, you might want to think again.

How do these security systems affect my insurance?

It turns out that many home insurance providers in Florida offer tons of discounts to homeowners who have safety and security devices in their properties, with some even offering up to 20 percent off.

This is no surprise.

Florida is known for having a crime rate that is higher than the national average. The chances that your home will be hit by property crime are 1 in 36, according to NeighborhoodScout.com.

That’s a scary statistic, but there is also this: not all security systems out there are considered discount-worthy by home insurers. And depending on your type of home, not all of the latest and greatest gadgets are necessary or worth the price.

That’s why we’ve created this list of the most common types of security systems that are most favored by insurers. In the end, it’s all about protecting your home, but you might as well get rewarded for it.

What are the different types of security systems?

There are several types of security systems out there, but the most common ones are burglar alarms, fire alarms, and sprinkler systems. And even within those categories, you can find a variety of types.

Smoke Detectors and Fire Alarms

This one seems like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many Florida homes do not already have smoke detectors installed.

Smoke detectors are devices that sense smoke, which could be an indicator of fire. Household smoke detectors usually sound a loud alarm in the presence of smoke to alert the residents, while some can go as far as alerting your local fire station.

These are different from fire alarms, which use a number of different devices at the same in order to sense and warn people when there is a presence of smoke, fire, carbon monoxide or more.

The National Fire Protection Association recommends homes should have smoke alarms installed inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home. Apartment buildings should have fire alarm systems.

Sprinklers

Like smoke detectors and fire alarms, sprinkler systems are intended to protect your home and residents in the event of a fire.

The sprinkler heads are connected to a system of pipes in the walls or ceiling of a room. When they are activated by heat, water bursts from the head and extinguishes the fire.

Sprinklers are pretty well-regarded, considering alarm systems can’t put out fires. This is why some home insurers will offer a 13 discount to homes with sprinklers.

Burglar alarms

In addition to guarding your home against fires, significant discount exists for homeowners taking a stand against theft and vandalism.

Burglar alarms are designed to detect intruders with the use of one or more sensors, such as spotlights, cameras, and lasers. They come part of home security systems, which work with a network of integrated devices as well as a central control panel.

Typically, these systems include door and window sensors and interior and exterior motion sensors. They also include a loud siren for when an intruder is detected.

Further, the system will come with window stickers and a yard sign, which is known to scare off potential burglars.

Home security systems are highly-praised by home insurance companies thanks to studies that show they can significantly reduce the risk of property crime.

Discounts for home insurance from major providers can range from 15 to 20 percent.

I’m planning to install one soon. Should I wait to purchase a policy?

If you’re planning to install a new security system, you can still purchase a new policy now.

Some insurers will offer you a discount now as long you install the system within 30 days to install the system. If you need more time, you could always alert your agent or insurance company and they will make the necessary changes to your insurance policy.

Getting your security system certificate

Before you can enjoy your these discounts, your insurance provider may request proof. This would be in the form of a certificate that shows you have a proper system that is properly installed.

These certificates typically come from the company that installed your security system, whether it be a fire alarm of sprinkler. Most companies have a template message that they can send to you, or directly to your insurance carrier.

To get this certificate, reach out to your installer. You can also reach out to an agent at HoneyQuote.com if you require extra assistance.
